"The universe you know is more fragile than you think. There are forces that can destroy your reality with but a wave of their hand, and all for kicks. I'm here to make sure that a certain person doesn't cause that to happen here."

Character History

First Encounter

Agent Sidestep in his original guise

Not long after Galatea Future arrived in the world of the Champions from an alternate future in another universe, Agent Sidestep arrived to assess her power levels and to see if she was still as powerful as she was when she defeated the Omniverse menace known as Alor. Sidestep believed that a being that was as powerful as she was - who could literally battle with gods - would be too much of a threat in any universe. At the very least, it was feared that her presence in the world of the Champions would attract other cosmic beings that the native heroes would not be able to defend against.

But, after measuring her abilities in modest combat, Sidestep came to realize along with his superiors that Galatea Future was no longer that powerful. He petitioned his superiors to re-assess her from a "Nigh-Omega" being to a "Sub-Alpha" one. He also recommended further observation would be needed to ensure she never reaches those potentials again. His superiors agreed, and then assigned him the role, which he reluctantly accepted.

Second Encounter

He would later appear in a more "civilian" attire, observing Galatea Future from a distance.

However he did not remain an "observer" when Galatea Future suffered a mysterious seizure outside the UNTIL headquarters. It was reported that she was carried to the Cambridge Biochem facility for treatment by an "unknown civilian". It would later be revealed that this Samaritan was Agent Sidestep.

Third Encounter

Agent Sidestep in his civilian guise

Agent Sidestep would later break from his "observer" status when the "hero-agent" Markman Gold used his corporate resources to "own" Galatea Future's name and likeness (not to mention her bank account).

After witnessing Galatea's frustrating meeting with Gold, it became clear that Galatea would need help in regaining legal control of her identity and her finances. He used his resources to find an appropriate legal remedy, then remotely contacted Galatea Future with a plan of attack, including introducing her to local attorney Candace Sinclair.

Fourth Encounter

Sidestep would have a fourth and more prolonged encounter with Galatea Future during the search for the assassin known as "Mister Blue". Unlike the two previous encounters, though, this one was authorized by his superiors, whom he called The Council of Light. He was allowed to reveal to Galatea that "Mister Blue" was really a multiverse assassin named Griff and that Griff was sent to hunt down Galatea Future and confirm her location in the world of the Champions.

It was also revealed during this conversation of his previous encounters and that those instances were done outside of the Council's approval.

He was asked to help in the apprehension of Griff, which he said that he was not able to do because it would exceed his status, and that any further intervention would lead to his recall by the Council. He did ask the Council to take custody of Griff as a threat to multiverse stability. Although the Council approved of this, they were not able to follow through as Griff was liberated by his mysterious employer.

Psilence of Conscience

During the "Psilence of Conscience" storyline, Sidestep was unaware of the changes in Candace's life. His emotional attachment to her blindsided him to the growing telepathic threat her alternate personality possessed until it was too late. He was telepathically attacked from behind and had to be teleported away through PROPHET.

He would later return to the Champions universe, but now more determined to avoid emotional entanglements.

Powers and Abilities

When he first appeared, Agent Sidestep wore a full bodysuit with numerous devices that aided in his investigation as well as provide data to his superiors through the PROPHET system. This included being able to scan the mind and memories of other beings and erase said memories.

After his first encounter with Galatea Future, he adopted a more "civilian" outfit to fit in with the populace. This also apparently paired down his devices, but he still has on-command access to the PROPHET system.

In addition to the devices he uses, Agent Sidestep has the power to teleport to different locations at will. At one point, he could also use this power to teleport pockets of space as an attack, but it not known if he still has this ability.

PROPHET is an advanced artificial intelligence system that serves as an assistant to a multiverse agent. PROPHET can search any available database for information. It can also be used to coordinate various multiverse devices for specific and delicate functions such as providing memory scans and erasures. PROPHET can also trigger emergency teleportation if Sidestep is overpowered.

Base of Operations

As revealed in "Future's Guardian" #12, Agent Sidestep operates through an underground tech base. The base contains a multidimensional teleport pad that serves as a focal point for his travels and also can teleport others to his location. PROPHET maintains this facility for Sidestep.

Despite not being human, Agent Sidestep does have some emotions. He has to work to suppress them, though. His assertions of not being human, as well as his status as a multiverse operative, has made him appear arrogant at times.
