Jimmy Hellfighter is a registered hero in Paragon City and a member of the Guardians of the Dawn supergroup. He first appeared in Issue #6 of the "Guardians of the Dawn Spotlight" series.

Character History

James "Hellfighter" Matthews was born and raised in the mean streets of Cleveland, Ohio. He joined the Navy out of high school, where his electrical skills were soon put to work onboard various ships. He also earned the nickname "Hellfighter" for his ferocity in any fight he ended up in.

Jimmy was on board the U.S.S. Joseph P. Kennedy when the ship was sent out during the Cuban Missile Crisis. During that time and under rough seas, one of the nuclear-tipped missiles was accidentally dropped during loading and the core container was ruptured. Jimmy quickly moved to save the life of the sailor, not knowing that he was exposed to the missile's radioactive elements until afterwards. He suffered no ill effects, though, and the ship's doctors cleared him for continued duty.

After his tours ended, Jimmy moved to Rhode Island and worked several odd jobs to keep the bills paid for him and his family. One of those jobs was with the local fire department. While responding to a burning building, Jimmy discovered that he could not be burned by fire. In fact, things would get even hotter around him. His gloves burned off, his protective gear would melt, but he would not succumb to flames or smoke.

Doctors discovered that Jimmy's body changed from that initial radioactive exposure. His force of will was stronger than ever, and he was not only immune to fire, but he could also generate it from his own body. At first this made him an ideal firefighter, since he could rush into any blaze without protective gear, but eventually insurance costs forced the department to let him go.

Jimmy worked various other jobs during that time as well. He was an electrician, a homebuilder, a welder, a police officer, a telephone lineman, and even a paramedic. His experience in these other positions opened the door for management opportunities, and soon he was trading in his work boots for executive loafers.

Hero Career

After the First Rikti Invasion of 2002, Jimmy's company was destroyed. He quickly put his services to use in the rescue and rebuilding of Paragon City. Because of his unique abilities and experience in various services, he was asked by City Hall to register as a superhero, going by his old Navy nickname of "Jimmy Hellfighter". This allowed him to wear multiple hats and serve where his skills could best be needed.

Jimmy was best known for his investigation of the corrupt police activities under then-Chief Conrad Bochco. This was especially true when it came to the infamous Blue Dog Squad, where he ended up working with the Libertarian Avenger to finally expose and bring down that group as well as force the chief to resign.

Eventually he joined the Guardians of the Dawn, where he continued to put his Jack-of-all-Trades abilites to use.

Post-AFTERMATH

Following the destruction of Galaxy City by the Rikti, Jimmy dedicated his time working with city officials in the search-and-rescue efforts there. He managed to save several people still trapped in the ruins of the city zone, but soon even he had to feel some despair further treks into the area only resulted in finding more corpses.

He was taken by surprise, then, when portals opened up on November 15th, 2012, and over 2200 people once thought missing or presumed dead suddenly appeared in the woods just north of Skyway City.

Death

But even though his former supergroup was vindicated and returned to active status, Jimmy Hellfighter was in no condition to return to them.

His exposure to the same radiation that gave him his abilities also gave him untreatable cancer. It was a death sentence that he knew was years in the making, even if he did not know when precisely it would take its toll.

At first he thought he could isolate himself from the ones he loved, from family and friends. But it was his time with the Guardians and with his family members that convinced him otherwise.

Jimmy Hellfighter passed away in February of 2014. He was given a hero's service.

Powers and Abilities

His primary ability was Fiery Melee. He could generate fire, either through contructs or for sheer offensive power.

His secondary ability was Willpower, which allowed him to power through problems on the force of will.

In addition to his fire-based offensive abilities, Jimmy carried a fire-axe from his days as a firefighter.

Jimmy was an avid fan of conservative talk radio, quickly spouting conservative and neo-conservative platitudes, much to the discomfort of several of his teammates. He is also a fan of PNN media personality Garry Becker, although he was not happy with some of Becker's earlier specials on the Guardians.
