"First Captain" is a character in the City of Heroes MMO. She is in reference to the original incarnation of Captain Paragonna.
Character History
Bethany Barlow came from a long line of police officers and was in the process of joining the Paragon City Police Department when she was asked to take part in the list of potential candidates for the Hero Shield Program. She excelled in the training and testing and soon became the chosen candidate to undergo the transformation.
Hero Shield Program
To meet the goals of the Hero Shield Program, the first incarnation of "Captain Paragonna" called for cybernetic implants from the Cyril Corporation, including bone plating on her forearms and shins, and a wireless reciver connecting her directly to the police communication and mainframe systems. She was also given a special police shield specifically designed to fit her forearm.
In June of 2006, she was given her first field-test. Investigating a theft of equipment from Kip Cantorum, Bethanie discovered a warehouse of Clockwork drones. It was here she encountered a stolen Cycotron drone that was repurposed to locate and free an entity called "Designate 'O'". The Cycotron drone overwhelmed Bethany's mind and took over her cybernetic implants. Even though rescued by her handlers, she was still compelled to find "Designate 'O'", attacking anyone that stood in her way. She was eventually stopped by other officers, but not before she crippled Captain Gladstone, the program's director of the time.
Once restrained, CyCorp attorneys took over and wisked Bethany away.
Resurfaced
Bethany remained "missing" for several years. She briefly resurfaced when the Stevie Walker-Rodgers, the current Captain Paragonna, began looking into the Program's first incarnation. When agents from the Cyril Corporation attempted to silence Agent Rodgers, Bethany appeared long enough to fight off the agents and make their escape.
After a quick conversation with her successor, Bethany vanished from the area. It would later be revealed that she was working with the Rocinante Group to attone for her past actions.
Her connection to Shadowborn is still not fully revealed.
Powers and Abilities
First Captain's primary ability is Martial Arts. She is a skilled unarmed combatant, although she is also trained in firearms through the Paragon City Police Department.
Her secondary ability is Shield Defense, having been personally trained by Blue Steel in the use of her special shield.
She also has several cybernetic implants still in her, including a wireless receiver allowing her to directly access mainframe and communication networks.
