Positron is an in-game character in the City of Heroes MMO and a key member of the Freedom Phalanx. He took the responsibility of leadership of the premiere hero team following the death of Statesman in 2012, although not by choice.
Character History
Doctor Raymond Keyes was an employee for Crey Industries, originally tasked with developing a "rescue suit", but he deluded himself when he thought that it would be used for just that. In truth, though, the suit was part of Countess Crey's ultimate goal to create corporate-owned heroes. The suit itself was finished when his best friend, Steve Berry, burst in being attacked by his co-worker. Without giving it a second thought, Keyes jumped into the prototype suit and used it to hold off the Crey goons and save his friend.
The incident itself caused Keyes to reconsider his employment with Crey. He took the suit as "severance payment" and became a superhero along with his best friend. Not long after that, "Positron" and "Synapse" joined the Freedom Phalanx.
During the Rikti War, Positron was badly injured. The suit kept him alive, but he also discovered that his ability to generate energy, caused by an earlier accident developing the suit, has grown beyond his means to control it. He was forced to wear the suit continually to keep the energy inside of him from exploding. He kept this from the others for fear that they would try to imprison him, especially after the incident in Siren's Call with Sunburst in 2004.
Just prior to the start of the Second Rikti Invasion in 2007, Positron was on a mission with the Phalanx when they discovered a Rikti unit led by a zombified version of Hero One. During the battle, his suit was ruptured, and he exploded. An advanced Vanguard team contained the explosion and managed to restore him to life, and finally in control of his powers.
Positron continues to serve as a hero and mentor to younger heroes. This task was doubled, however, with the murder of Statesman in 2012 by Darrin Wade. Although he did not want the job, Positron felt he needed to become the new leader of the Phalanx in the hopes that someone more noble and worthy would eventually take over.
Powers and Abilities
Positron's primary ability is Radiation Emission. He can use the energy in him as a form of protection.
Positron's secondary ability is Radiation Blast. He can focus the energy in his body into an offensive weapon.
He can also channel this power inside of him to fly.
He initially wore the Positron tech-suit as a form of protection. Later it became the means to regulate and contain the energy inside of him. After his resurrection, he used the suit as a means to better focus his powers.

Positron has been seen in several comics, especially in the Top Cow incarnation of the "City of Heroes" comic series.
According to character creator and game developer Matt Miller, Positron was based on a character that he created in the original Champions role-playing game.
