Jonathan St. John Smythe

Jonathan St. John Smythe is a character in the City of Heroes MMO. He serves as the director for the division of the Federal Bureau for Super-powered Affairs known as the Scientific Experimentation, Research and Application to Paranormal Humans or S.E.R.A.P.H.. He is located inside City Hall in Atlas Park.

Character History

When it comes to stereotypical scientists, you have either the mad scientist or the absent-minded genius.

And then there is Jonathan St. John Smythe.

Jonathan wants you to think that he's the absent-minded genius. He's a super-genius. He has helped contribute to the wonderful inventions used by heroes. He also knows that if the wrong people realize just how valuable he is to Paragon City, it would make him a target. So he's learned to downplay his intelligence and his importance to the FBSA.

He was the one that came up with the idea to have two separate FBSA offices in Paragon City, one in Atlas Park, and the other in Galaxy City. Each office would have their own directors and the heroes would rely on them each. And for a while it worked. But then the Shivan meteors devastated Galaxy City, and the FBSA operatives that survived the attack ended up working alongside their counterparts back in City Hall.

But that's okay, because now there are other people that he can turn to and claim that "they" are really the ones "in charge". And that leaves him free to continue to work on making Paragon City a better place to live.
