Samuel "Sam" de Raven is a character in the world of Champions Online MMO.

He is the CEO of Millennium Insurance after the death of his brother, Phillip de Raven. He is also the mentor and boss to Cassie Dare.

Character History

Samuel is the older son of Robert de Raven, who was the CEO of a moderate-sized insurance company operating out of Detroit. Samuel, or Sam, always pushed himself to prove his worth to his parents. This was especially true after his brother Phillip was born. Phillip was seen as the dreamer, the big ideas kind of guy. The two never could compete against each other and found they each had something to offset the other.

After getting his law degree, Samuel became an agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigation. He found he had a particular knack for finding details in things most people did not. This made him a thorough investigator.

After the destruction of Detroit, Samuel was part of the federal task force into the devastation and to ascertain who was responsible for it. His investigation concluded without doubt that Doctor Destroyer was responsible for the weapon that devastated the area. It was during this time that his brother and father asked him to join them in a new venture, the creation of Millennium Insurance. He declined, saying that he was still needed in the FBI.

Eventually Samuel found and married his wife, Rebecca. The two had busy lives but found solace together.

When Phillip and his fiancée Anabelle were attacked and Anabelle was killed, Samuel first offered to help investigate the crime, but was blocked by his superior. Eventually his brother found the means to find his assailant and get the revenge he deserved, but Samuel couldn't help but feel guilty that he couldn't give aid when needed.

Then Samuel learned that Phillip became a fugitive hunter named Ravenclaw. Samuel felt obligated to help his brother in any way he could as a way to compensate for not being allowed to help him earlier.

A few years later, their father passed away. Phillip assumed the position of CEO of Millennium Insurance, which was only right as he was the co-founder of the company. But the added burdens of the job also complicated his quest for justice as Ravenclaw. Samuel was allowed to retire from the FBI and aid his brother, serving as Administrative Vice-President, a position that almost guaranteed he would be the next CEO. But, for Samuel, it wasn't about the position. It was about helping his brother.

Then Phillip revealed that he was dying. While they knew the company was still going to be in good hands, Samuel had concerns about Phillip continuing his other cause to the bitter end. He urged his brother to stop being Ravenclaw, but Phillip said he couldn't. Not yet.

Two years later, Phillip contacted Samuel in Rhode Island. He was in pursuit of a notorious criminal named Jack the Blade when there was a viscous assault at a church that left only one survivor. Phillip needed Samuel's help in declaring the surviving bride dead and to set up a new identity for her once she recovered. Samuel used his contacts from the FBI to declare Aubrey Darnell "dead" and to create a brand new identity for the woman as "Cassandra Dare".

With Phillip struggling to maintain appearances, Samuel was tasked with training Cassie Dare with the ins-and-outs of being a case investigator, while she was also training in secret to be a vigilante. It was during her first "mission" that Phillip succumbed to his disease. Samuel was the first to discover his brother, but it was too late to save him.

After the funeral, Samuel told Cassie that Phillip's will was amended to give Cassie ownership of the top floors of the Raven Building as well as the property underneath it, provided she follow in the path put before her. She agreed with Samuel's continued mentorship and supervision to continue as both a case investigator and as a new vigilante, Red Sinner.

Today, Samuel remains as CEO of Millennium Insurance, making sure that the city endures and is well protected.

Powers and Abilities

Samuel is a trained federal investigator who specialized in finding things most other agents could not. As such, he also received extensive training in firearms. His attention to detail while not ignoring the bigger picture also transitioned into a great administrative skill.

Personality

Samuel was always seen as the "realist" member of the family, as opposed to his younger brother Phillip, who was the "dreamer". Samuel was always the one that pushed himself to be the best at what he does to impress his father, but he was never jealous when Phillip teamed up with their father to create Millennium Insurance. Rather, he saw the new business as a way for them to excel while he continued his work as an investigator.

His wife Rebecca is the love of his life. She is the one person he never felt he had to compete against.

In Cassie Dare, he sees a daughter he never had, as well as an opportunity to train another person to be skilled in something he excelled in.

Related Information

According to creator David 2, the character was originally inspired by FBI Agent Bill Maxwell, played by Robert Culp in the TV series "Greatest American Hero".
