Whyspera
Whyspera is a registered hero in Paragon City and a member of the Guardians of the Dawn supergroup. She first appeared in Issue #5 of the "Guardians of the Dawn Spotlight" series and was featured in Issue #27.
Character History
Wendy Spyre grew up in a musical family. Her grandmother was a lounge singer and member of the church choir. Her mother was a popular singer in the 1980's. Her father was a record producer. While her brothers persued careers elsewhere, she wanted to follow in her mother's footsteps and be a singer.
At first, she showed genuine talent, being able to belt out pop songs with the same passion as some the best in the business, and in a vocal range that would put opera singers to shame. Her parents spared no expense to set her up with some studio time so she could become the next B-2d-ON-2d-SAY.
But the night before she was scheduled to make her first demo recording, she suddenly lost her voice. The doctors could not explain what was happening to her, although they did detect an abnormality in her genetic structure, which officially classified her as a "mutant". (It would later be revealed that this was the real secret behind her mother's talent.)
A week later, Wendy's voice returned, but she still could not sing, and she could only talk in a whisper. Wendy's classmates teased her and called her Whyspera. After endless teasing, Wendy finally had enough and let loose with a (literal) eardrum-shattering scream. Several teens were rushed to the hospital.
After the incident, Wendy was able to speak and sing normally, however when she hit certain notes, she caused damage to nearby objects. This would happen even if she whistled.
Fearing that this would ruin her daughter's career, Wendy's mother contact the Genetic Investigation and Facilitation Team in Paragon City for help. The G.I.F.T. specialists there trained Wendy how to use her abilities without causing unintentional harm, although they also confirmed her worst fears: that her powers are triggered when she sings. Seeking a new direction, she took their advice and became a registered superhero under the nickname she was given as a child.
Eager to make it big as a hero, unfortunately, led her to make some early mistakes, such as rushing into dangerous situations instead of waiting for others. And her habit of singing when she is nervous would also cause her powers to accidentally be triggered. These mistakes often poisoned her chances of working in a team setting.
But it was Captain Paragonna, the founding leader of the Guardians of the Dawn, that saw real potential in her and invited her to join the group. On one of her first missions, working with the Libertarian Avenger and MidKnight X, she made the same mistakes as before, rushing into the mission without a plan. But rather than be sent away or kicked off the group, the Avenger gave her the opportunity to redeem herself in the field. Since then she has grown and developed into a dependable member of the group.
She has recently been spending a lot of time with new hero Street Justice.
