Defender is the premiere champion and leader of The Champions in Millennium City. He is also the iconic hero in the world of Champions Online.

Character History

Most people think that James Harmon IV is just a shiftless womanizing playboy barely carrying on with the family business.

But in truth, James follows a long family line of heroes. His great-grandfather, James I, explored the wild jungles of Africa. His grandfather, James II, was a member of the famed Chicago Prohibition fighters known as "The Untouchables". His father, James III, served with distinction and honor in World War II and built the powerful defense contracting company known as Harmon Industries.

At first, James IV lived up to the hype of a silver-spoon playboy, much to his family's disappointment. He was content with just working in the Research & Development lab, coming up with devices that satisfied his own desires but had little other use.

But then he witnessed first-hand the devastation caused by Doctor Destroyer in the Battle of Detroit. The deaths of thousands, the billions in destruction, the loss of friends and family members, and the shock and horror of it all left James asking what he could do about it. It was that tragedy that inspired James to follow in his family's true footsteps.

Using the latest of his company's technology, he created a power-suit and called himself "Defender".

Although his initial debut as a hero left much to be desired, he eventually moved to the newly-reborn Millennium City and declared himself its champion. Using the sponsorship of his alter-ego, Defender recruited the heroes that would help make up The Champions, and then used the resources of Harmon Industries to give that group a very-visible base of operations.

Today, James is equally divided in his responsibilities both as Defender and as a very active CEO for his family business.

Personal Life

Although James Harmon IV still has a reputation of being a playboy, it is actually his role as Defender that seems to attract women the most.

Defender has been romantically linked to fellow Champions member Witchcraft, and it is said that both Sapphire and the newest Black Mask each had a strong crush on him at some point. Several female supervillains have also expressed their love for Defender, including a few that send him love letters from prison to the Champions headquarters.

There is an rumor that links James Harmon with Galatea Future, however both people have strongly denied such a relationship.

Powers and Abilities

Defender wears custom armor that gives him superhuman strength, the power of flight, and also the ability to project energy beams at his opponent. His helmet connects him to the SOCRATES system, giving him instant access to all heroes. His eyepieces contain special sensors that can assess tactical strengths and weaknesses as well as see beyond the normal human spectrum. His helmet also has a sliding faceplate that can protect his mouth from damage and also allow him to breathe in space or underwater for a limited period of time.

Other than his technology, James Harmon has no meta abilities. He is, however, highly intelligent and very creative when properly motivated.
