The Editor

The Editor is a character used to breach the Fourth Wall of storytelling and represent the authors/artists themselves in the story.

In the "Guardians of the Dawn Spotlight" series, the "Editor" is envisioned as a publishing editor, giving assignments to the operatives that are aware of their existence. It is here that the "Editor" helps to mold events in the Paragon Universes.

The White Hallway

Each Paragon Universe is defined by a hallway of doors. The doors correspond to a locked door in the blue-side Medical Teleport area of the Pocket D nightclub. This alcove is watched over by the Pocket D version of War Witch, who is considered herself an anomaly since she also exists as a disembodied sprit in Croatoa. Access through these doors into the other universes is provided by a special key which are handed out only by the Editors themselves.

The Editors Office

"He Who Chronicles..."

The offices of the editors are designed based on how each editor views their role in their respective stories. For the Editor in the "Guardians of the Dawn Spotlight" series, the office represents an old newspaper editors office with glass walls, stacks of papers, and an old fashioned computer system. He also has a deskplate with the words "He Who Chronicles" on it.

Agents of the Editors

Knowledge of the "Editors" is limited to a handful of people within the City of Heroes universe.

• Doc Tor was revealed to be working for "The Editor" during Guardians of the Dawn Spotlight Issue #0

• The Pocket D version of War Witch was also revealed to be an agent of the Editors.

• Mender Roebuck of Ouroboros was revealed to be an agent of the Editors in "Guardians of the Dawn Spotlight" #10.

• The Paragon Pundit is considered an active agent for the Editors as he provides regular articles for The Battlerock X Chronicles.

The personification of the creator as an in-story character takes many forms.

• In "The Matrix" Series, the Matrix itself is represented by a sentient program called "The Architect", who takes credit for the creation of the Matrix and the destiny of its characters.

  • as himself in the movie Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer where he was turned away from the wedding of Reed Richards and Susan Storm
  • in the movie "Iron Man" where he is mistaken for "Hef" because of the bevy of women around him, and again mistaken in Iron Man 2, this time as Larry King

  • in Thor where he tries and fails to pick up Thor's hammer.
  • and in Captain America: The First Avenger as one of the generals in World War II.

• In the ABC series "Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman" the title characters meet with a mysterious character known as "Mike", whom everyone suddenly knows, and who manages to patch things together for Lois and Clark to get married, with "Mike" serving as the Justice of the Peace. "Mike" is hinted at being the personification of DC Comics editor Mike Carlin.

• In the DC Comics series "Sovereign Seven", the "Sovereigns" met in a coffee house run by two women who, it turns out, were representatives of the creators of the whole series.
