Character History

Nathan Quire realized at a very early age that he had a strange control over other people. He could get them to do whatever he wanted. And the funny thing was that his victims believed they were acting on their own free will. Teachers all loved him. Nobody bullied him. Girls adored him. He could do no wrong, and his family members could deny him nothing.

Eventually others began to realize that young Nathan was an early-blooming mutant, extremely rare but not unheard of. Most mutations manifest during puberty, but in Nathan's case, his telepathic powers manifested around the age of five.

By the time he was a teenager, his use of telepathic abilities began to attract attention. Sister Psyche of the Freedom Phalanx started investigating reports of a "cult-like" neighborhood surrounding a young man who could do and get whatever he wanted. But before she could arrive there, the "cult-like" collective began to break down, and nobody had any idea why they acted the way that they did, and they had no idea who the "boy" was that they loved more than their own family.

Nathan realized that the only way he could continue to operate without government limitation was to do so in anonymity. One of his last acts before leaving was to have everyone he knew "forget" that he exists. All documents concerning him were either altered or destroyed.

Some time after that, he was recruited by Tainted Eve to join The Libra Order. It was an offer that he could not refuse since it gave him some measure of sanction and a way to remain anonymous. And that that it required him was to change his name slightly to "N.Quire".

Debts of Honor

In the one-shot special "The Libra Order: Debts of Honor", it was revealed that Quire was responsible for the retirement of Icon Powers. Even though he could not directly manipulate the elder hero's mind, he could plant subtle suggestions and ideas into Icon's head, questioning decisions, raising doubt, even taking blame for things that he had no control over. With the death of Jimmy Hellfighter, the last suggestion put in Icon's mind was one of retirement, and it was the one that took hold.

Powers and Abilities

His Primary Ability is Mind Control. He has the power to control and manipulate minds, including being able to alter their memories. This can be a direct assault or a subtle one.

His Secondary Ability is Psionic Assault. He can use his telepathic power to inflict severe pain in others.

It is believed that he can also use his power to disguise himself.

Personality

N.Quire shows traits of narcissism as well as being a sociopath. He certainly believes that he can control any situation through his telepathy.

He fears only one thing: a telepath stronger than him or at least one that is more experienced than him. That's why he's remained under the radar of authorities.

Related Information

N.Quire was first seen in "The Guardian Powers" #10 as being the source of Galatea Powers' "bad day", although it was revealed that he was simply following the instructions of Mistress Libra.

According to creator David 2, he was inspired by DC Comics villains Hector Hammond and the Riddler, and Marvel Comics mutants Cable and Quintin Quire.
